Pilates is known to be a terrific form of exercise to help manage back pain and various other conditions. It is also great for toning up, improving flexibility, strength and posture and can even give you a flatter stomach. A fact that is not so well known is that Pilates can also greatly help with scoliosis.

I have been teaching Pilates for over 10 years now and have had the pleasure of helping countless people with back pain. I have recently begun to specialise in Scoliosis (my interest stems from family experience) and am now teaching private Scolio-Pilates sessions. I am the only fully-qualified Scolio-Pilates instructor currently working in the UK.

The sessions take place in Eltham and Greenwich, southeast London.

Scolio-Pilates

Scolio-Pilates was developed by Karena Thek Lineback (see http://osteopilates.com/). The focus is on lengthening and stretching the spine through elongation exercises then realigning the spine using props and special techniques. Once the new alignment is achieved, we then use Pilates exercises to strengthen the core while in the new, stretched and realigned position. The goal is to create lasting changes which can help to alleviate pain and discomfort and improve mobility.

The Programme

Most clients come to see me regularly for a series of sessions on a weekly basis. However, this will not be suitable if you live further away so I am also now offering intensive sessions over a 3-day period. Both options are described below...

Weekly sessions

My programme of weekly sessions consists of an initial 75-minute assessment followed, if you choose to continue, by a minimum of 5 one-hour private sessions. During the sessions you will use the Reformer, Tower and other Pilates equipment. To achieve the best results possible, you would need to commit to the following:

1. Coming once or twice per week for a minimum of 5 sessions after the first assessment.
2. You will be given some exercises to do at home and should do these every day.
3. Payment for the first assessment is to be made in advance to hold the reservation.
4. If you wish to continue after the first session then the cost for the remaining 5 sessions will be due in one payment*.
5. I will need to see any x-rays and medical reports that you have related to your scoliosis. If you do not have x-rays than I strongly advise that you visit your GP and ask to have some taken BEFORE coming to see me. A photo of your x-ray will be sufficient.

*If this is difficult then a payment plan can be arranged.

Intensive programme

If you live further afield and cannot come to me on a regular basis to complete the programme, then we can arrange intensive sessions over a 3 day period. This would need to be booked well in advance so that I can clear my schedule for you. The intensive programme would work as follows:

Day 1: One 90 minute to 2 hour assessment in the afternoon or evening.

Day 2: One session of up to 2 hours in the morning and another 60 minutes in the afternoon/evening.

Day 3: One session of up to 3 hours

Afterwards: You will be given homework exercises to do every day once you leave. You will also be given a full set of scolio wedges. I strongly suggest that you follow up the programme by coming to visit me for occasional refresher sessions. If this is not possible then I will attempt to answer any questions wherever possible by email or Skype/Facetime.

Before booking you in for an intensive programme, I will need to see X-rays, medical reports and photographs and, if possible, we could arrange a live discussion over Facetime or Skype. I will not be able to see you for the intensive programme without x-rays. If you cannot get your hands on the original x-ray then a photo of your x-ray will be sufficient.

I am happy to try to find a time for the intensive programme that fits in with your schedule. Contact me to disuss this if you are interested.

Results

A common question is what results can I expect to see? My goal is to help you to live your life as fully as possible. Common benefits include reduction in pain, improved breathing, improved posture, improved mobility, increase in height, improved flexibility, increase in muscle tone and strength. But don't take my word for it, below are some comments and photos from clients...

After 10 sessions

" I am much more aware of my posture, I feel straighter and don't get the back spasms that I used to get. I feel more stable and upright and less slouched. I definitely feel taller!" - Julie

"The Pilates classes made a really big difference to Leyla's posture as well as helping her to both understand and manage how she exercised to protect her spine. The sessions were well structured with very clear written and visual examples to enable her to continue to exercise independently." - Leyla's mother

"I have been seeing Jen for Scolio-Pilates sessions for almost a year now, and have experienced marked improvement - both in terms of awareness/understanding of my S-curve scoliosis, and physiological benefits such as reduced pain and improved alignment. Before starting my sessions with Jen, I used to experience mild breathlessness. Within 2 weeks of my first Pilates 4 Scoliosis session, I noticed that this now rarely happens, which I believe is a result of the breathing techniques learnt during the sessions.

In addition, back pain had been a constant feature in my life, but the various lengthening and elongation exercises that Jen has designed for me have greatly reduced the discomfort and tension in my back. Importantly, I have also acquired a new understanding of scoliosis and how it affects all parts of my body (my knees, hips, pelvis, ribs, shoulders, etc). I am hence much more aware of how I may be slipping subconsciously into an "unbalanced" or "uneven" position - even during the most mundane daily tasks like driving, sitting, or pouring a glass of water - and have learnt to make the adjustments to move into more proper alignment. Over time, I have noticed an improvement in my general alignment (particularly my shoulders) and physical wellbeing.

Above all, Jen has a thorough understanding of scoliosis (and constantly seeks to enhance her knowledge!) and a real commitment to helping her clients." - Cherie
